Everyone knows that eating less is good but what can you eat on a 1200 calorie diet? Everyone knows that low carbohydrate diets are good for losing weight and slowing down the aging process. Here’s the catch: can you eat a low-carb diet without losing muscle mass?
When I was on a low-carb diet and drinking plenty of water, I didn’t lose much of anything. It took months to make it through a typical workout week, and I still weighed in at my highest weight ever! For me, the major benefit of a low-carb diet is the ability to carry more muscle mass.
When I was following a low-carb diet, I used to have the attitude that if I couldn’t lift weights, then I couldn’t lose weight. After two months of just using the treadmill as a cardio workout, I lost ten pounds.
Well, I continued to believe that and ended up gaining ten more. As a result, I didn’t feel as good when I lifted weights as I did when I started working out.
Now here’s the catch: if you’re weight is dropping but you’re not seeing much muscle gain, then you need to modify your diet. If you don’t lose weight, then you’re going to be looking forward to eating a delicious meal filled with healthy ingredients. If you are eating a high-fat meal, then you’ll be making your body burn more fat and storing more carbs.
Also, protein and carbohydrates should come from the same food groups. Foods like pasta, pasta sauce, potato chips, peanut butter, and chocolate are high in carbohydrates. With a low-carb diet, you should be avoiding these foods. Instead, you should focus on eating whole grain pasta sauces, raw fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy, and low-fat meat.
Start eating foods from your favorite low-carb cookbook. Try to create a menu that incorporates foods that are both low in carbs and high in protein.
Next, increase your intake of low-fat and high-protein foods like: lean meats like chicken, turkey, skinless turkey breast, etc., beans, lentils, and tofu. Choose lean meat as the main source of protein in your meals instead of full-fat meats because they will add too much fat to your diet. Avoid fat-filled junk foods like cookies, chips, cookies and snacks because they will make you feel deprived and give you the opposite of what you are trying to accomplish by reducing your carb intake.
You can also serve your high protein meals with pasta or rice. Pasta and rice have been shown to contain higher amounts of healthy carbs and a lower amount of fat than white rice, which is probably one of the reasons why they are such a great source of carbs in a low-carb diet.
If you are on a low-carb diet, you will find that you aren’t getting enough of the nutrients that are important for muscle building and burning of fats. Eat carbs like whole grains, potatoes, and other vegetables like spinach, broccoli, kale, and brussel sprouts to get the protein you need and your calories to work for you.
The main reason why carbs are bad for muscle gain is because they fill you up and make you crave for more! So if you want to lose weight without gaining muscle, you should eat low-carb meals every day. Try to eat smaller portions so you are only eating the necessary carbs for the day so you won’t end up craving for more carbs later.
If you want to lose weight, focus on high protein foods and avoid foods with excessive carbs. While it may seem hard to change your diet plan, the first few weeks are very difficult but with consistent effort you will notice a significant difference in your muscle growth and weight loss.
